About Indian Banking Sector:

The first bank in India was the Bank of Hindustan, established in 1770. The largest bank in India is the State Bank of India (SBI). This was one of the three banks funded by the Presidencies of British India Government; the other two were the Bank of Bombay and the Bank of Madras. Currently, the Indian banking sector is classified into Scheduled Banks, which include Public Sector Banks, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), Private Sector Banks, and Foreign Banks, as well as Non-Scheduled banks. The Scheduled Banks are regulated under the 2nd Schedule of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act, 1934, while the Non-Scheduled banks are regulated under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

Currently, there are 27 Public Sector Banks in India, including 19 Nationalized banks, 6 State Bank of India (SBI) and its associate banks, 2 other public sector banks (Bharatiya Mahila Bank and IDBI Bank), and 2 newly proposed banks (India Post Payments Bank).
