Currently, the Indian banking sector is classified into Scheduled Banks, which include Public Sector Banks, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), Private Sector Banks, and Foreign Banks, as well as Non-Scheduled banks. The Scheduled Banks are regulated under the 2nd Schedule of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act, 1934, while the Non-Scheduled banks are regulated under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

Currently, there are 27 Public Sector Banks in India, including 19 Nationalized banks, 6 State Bank of India (SBI) and its associate banks, 2 other public sector banks (Bharatiya Mahila Bank and IDBI Bank), and 2 newly proposed banks (India Post Payments Bank).
